What Works Best for Your Hair’s Type and Porosity

The starting point to care for your natural hair is knowing your hair type, but more importantly—it’s porosity. Determining your hair type opens the door for best products to use for maximum health. Hair types range from wavy, coily, and curly, types A, B, and C, to high and low porosity. But what does it all mean, and how do you figure out your own?

Hair type refers to the shape your hair follicles naturally form. It is very common that you carry more than one type of pattern. Understanding your hair type will help you properly pick products, detangle, and style your locks.

 There are various types:

  • Type 1: Straight; ranging from types 1A – 1C and can carry more body than hold curls.
  • Type 2: Wavy; which range from types 2A – 2C and isn’t very dry nor oily.
  • Type 3: Curly; ranging from types 3A – 3C; locks typically take the shape of an “S” with more spiral or corkscrew curls.
  • Type 4: Coily, ranging from types 4A – 4C, and locks are more defined as a “Z”. Hair is finer and densely packed.

Hair porosity refers to your hair's ability to absorb moisture. Measured from low, normal,to high, you can test your hair's porosity by dipping a few strands into a bowl of water and observing the absorption.

How do you moisturize your hair based on its porosity?

Low Porosity: heat does will for low porosity absorption. Open your cuticles by sitting under a dryer or using a thermal cap after applying a deep conditioner. We recommend our Algae Renew Deep Conditioner, which is packed with vitamins and moisture-maximizing benefits.

High Porosity: Unlike low porosity locks, high porosity does better without heat and chemical treatments. We recommend using protein treatments like our Nangai & Tsubaki Strength Restore Protein Treatment to seal in oils.

Curl typing and density work together to help products be more effective. Two people can have the same hair type, but different porosities and the same products could give them drastically different results. Regardless of your type, remember to moisturize, hydrate, and LOVE your locks. Let it be known that ALL hair types are embraced and beautiful, and we celebrate all curls, coils, and patterns!
