Atlanta-based creative and brand strategist Quinita McCullars is about serving BIG energy. With her gift of gab, she helps brands authentically connect with their audiences online. I am a beautiful, confident, chocolate-skinned, and plus-sized woman that is just scratching the surface of my potential.” Embarking on a creative journey through natural hairToday, McCullars makes content creation look easy, but her talent took several years to cultivate. “My journey started about five years ago, and it came about because I was trying to find a creative outlet for myself. I have always been an outgoing person and super creative, so I wanted to build that into something. But understand, social media back then, meaning my college days from 2009 to 2014, was vastly different than what it has evolved into. And quite frankly, I didn’t know the first thing about how to get started, let alone video editing,” she said. Inspired by the booming natural hair movement on YouTube, she began taking content creation and haircare more seriously. After learning newfound techniques, she perfected her haircare regime and began practicing with her friends and family. This would be the push she needed to start transitioning her hobby into a brand focused on hair and beauty.
“I was doing my hair one day in my living room, and the idea popped into my head. Before I could think it through, my mom walked in and blurted out, “Do that YouTube thing; you’ve been putting it off too long. You have a light in you and can help someone else by sharing it.” I launched my YouTube channel, Quinita Charnell. And, of course, my brand is all about hair, beauty, and other creative DIYs.”All about the BIG, red hair Curly, full of life and bounce, McCullar’s hair is synonymous with her bold and vivacious demeanor. It not only represents her outlook on life but now has become a signature look her followers have come to expect.“It’s funny because people don’t know my signature hair is a crochet wig. I style them to look as if it’s growing straight from my scalp.”As a self-proclaimed ‘low-maintenance’ natural, McCullars is about keeping her hair routine simple and consistent. There are days when I don’t feel like it, lack confidence, doubt myself, and overthink, but I still show up for myself and the community I’m building.”Juggling work, family, and a full social calendar can be exhausting. Still, the serial entrepreneur prioritizes her emotional and mental health above all. She follows a strict routine to maintain balance, motivating her to stay productive.“I take a half hour to meditate, read some, and/or say positive affirmations to myself, and then hop in the shower to get dressed. I try not to look at my phone until after my routine is completed so I don’t get distracted or see anything that may alter my mood.”
