Hey Rosettes, Camille Rose is returning to our roots as we celebrate the richness of Black culture this Black History Month and onward. Of course, we had to discuss one of our favorite subjects, Black Hair! As you know, Black hair is beautiful, unique, and versatile. From curly coils to twist-outs and more, textured strands are a way for Black people to reconnect with their heritage. Thankfully, the modern natural hair movement placed textured tresses at the forefront, honoring the legacy of Black hair within the beauty industry and beyond. Hair Story Hair has always been the cornerstone of tradition in Black communities dating back to ancient Africa. Hair played a significant role in past societies, with certain styles as distinguishing markers identifying marital and social status, fertility, and more. Many modern styles are vestiges of ancient techniques, including the beloved Bantu Knots, which are said to have originated from the ancient Zulu tribes in western and southern Africa. Ancient hair care regimes As part of such an illustrious history, maintaining superior hair care is a phenomenon that has been around for a while. One of the earliest pieces of evidence of hair care can be seen in Egypt. Both men and women held cleansed hair in high regard. Regarding hair manageability, Egyptian women often used natural remedies such as Castor oil and creams. Black hair as an art form If a picture is worth a thousand words, then early images of Black hair in art depict a reference for elaborate style, societal nobility, and spirituality. In the traveling exhibition, "Hair in African Art and Culture," organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, hundreds of images shed light on the windows of the past with every unique sculpture and articulate design. From carefully crafted masks with pronounced heads indicating a spiritual reference to warriors with long hair covered in amulets, many figures demonstrate how Black hair was revered and celebrated in ancient cultures. Modern tributes to Black hair The natural hair movement continues to transform the beauty industry and reinvigorate much-needed conversations regarding inclusiveness in beauty. In 2019, The CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair) Act was spearheaded by the CROWN Coalition to end hair discrimination. It has now been adopted by 20 states and continues to grow support internationally. As the world continues to learn and acknowledge the history of Black hair, it lays the groundwork for a greater understanding of Black communities. Recently, Hair Tales on Hulu with executive producers Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Michaela Angela Davis highlighted this further as they open up space for dialog, capturing Black women's experience through the lens of hair. Our founder Janell Stephens has expressed her appreciation for natural hair in all its glory from the beginning. And as a Black-owned beauty business, Camille Rose aims to continue to serve as an inspiration for the Black community and the beauty industry.

I was an investigator for the treasury department, and I just felt like I couldn’t do that for the next forty-something years and retire and then start living my life. So, I reverted to my childhood, and what made me happy was hair and makeup. When I started, makeup was still a hobby. I was navigating a new, scary space, but I enjoyed the journey.” Bradford’s talent extends far beyond hair and makeup. As a businesswoman, she’s established herself as a contender in her industry working on projects involving Bishop T.D. Jakes, Kamala Harris, and many more. The multi-hyphenated beauty savant added author to her title with the release of her first book, 'In Pursuit of A Dream.'Camille’s Corner caught up with Bradford, who candidly discussed her favorite Camille Rose Blends, her journey in the beauty industry, and tips for Rosettes ready to embark on their entrepreneurial paths. If you want to do bridal hair and makeup, don’t reach out to someone who is doing television because they are two different industries. Camille’s Corner: What legacy do you want to leave behind?Bradford: I want to leave a legacy that I never gave up on anything that I said I wanted to do. I want clothes to understand that they also can do the same thing but they have to get out of their own way.

Emancipation CelebrationOriginally known as “Jubilee Day,” the first Juneteenth (a mashup of June and 19th, the day that all enslaved people in America were emancipated in 1865) took place in Galveston, Texas and was organized by freedmen. Although Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African-American holiday in the United States, it is the newest federally recognized holiday in the U.S. Despite being celebrated in several states for decades, Juneteenth was just declared a federally recognized holiday in 2021.While Juneteenth is a day of jubilation and fun, it is also a day of commemoration of Black culture and remembrance of the African-Americans subjected to the cruelties of slavery. As activist Tanesha Grant said, “The 4th of July was never about Black people. Juneteenth is just for us. As Black people, we are told we don’t deserve our holidays rooted in our history. Everything is whitewashed. Juneteenth is for us. Juneteenth symbolizes the hope that my children and grandchildren will be free. Our take is that when used properly, oils and butters can work hair wonders. Let's take an in-depth look at the ins and outs of oils and butters and why we think they should absolutely be a part of your hair care regiment.All About Oils It’s no secret that natural hair thrives by its own set of rules. No matter your hair type or texture though, one thing remains true: it’s all about moisture and maintenance. Oils protect the hair from dryness, which leads to breakage. With an estimated 65% of the U.S. population having naturally curly, coily, or kinky hair, it figures that most people are working with more than one hair type. Come with us on a deep dive into the ins and outs of multi-textured hair and how to give it the attention it craves. Let’s talk textureThe first step to treating your multi-textured hair right is discovering what your hair types are. Hair type has as much to do with texture as it does with porosity with Type 1a being the straightest and Type 4c, the kinkiest. Want to find out what your hair types are? Take a look at your hair after it’s freshly washed. The hair that dries completely straight is Type 1. If it dries wavy, it’s likely a Type 2. If your hair dries curly, that’s Type 3 hair, and if you’ve got kinks and coils, that’s definitely a Type 4. Generally, hair that falls under the A sub-type has the thinnest strand size, while sub-type C has the thickest strands - sub-type B falls somewhere in the middle.The ABC’s of strand TLCOnce you’ve figured out what types of hair you have where, it’s time to focus on care. Justice and JuneteenthThe newest federally recognized holiday in the United States, Juneteenth, is all about commemorating the freedom of African-Americans and paying tribute to Black culture across the world, but specifically in America. Short for “June Nineteenth,” Juneteenth originated in Galveston, Texas, marking the fateful day in 1865 that all slaves were effectively emancipated by federal troops. Originally called “Jubilee Day,” the first Juneteenth was organized by Texas freedmen a year later. The day became known as a day of fun and festivities but also one of remembrance and honor for Black tradition and culture. Considered the longest running African-American holiday in the United States, Juneteenth became an official federally recognized holiday in 2021, although it has been recognized as such by many states for years prior. Birth of Beauté Noir Fest As a proud Black-owned brand, it was our pleasure to present the first Beauté Noir to the world in June 2021. An elegant gala of epic proportions, the first Beauté Noir paid tribute to Juneteenth with unforgettable entertainment, inspiring speakers, delectable dishes and flowing champagne amongst some of Atlanta’s biggest trendsetters and trailblazers. The reception was decked out in Camille Rose’s signature blush pink complete with a rose theme and pops of golden glitz. Hosted by lifestyle specialist, Kenny Burns, the event included a lively cocktail hour featuring Black-owned La Fête du Rosé bubbly, DJ Stormy spinning, and an awards ceremony honoring public figures who play pivotal roles in Atlanta’s Black community. Among the honorees recognized with Camille Rose Beauté Noir Changemaker Awards were Jai Ferrell, Melissa Proctor, Dr. Lakeysha Hollman and Rasheeda Frost. Camille Rose master mixtress and CEO Janell Stephens also announced her donation to the “I Fund Women” charity, the “go-to marketplace for women-owned businesses.” The 2022 Beauté Noir Fest Is Going to be Epic We’re beyond stoked to announce that we’re back at it with Beauté Noir in 2022! From the red carpet to the runway and beyond, stellar stylists work behind the scenes and the screens to bring us some of our fave celebs’ hottest looks. This week we’re paying homage to five of the top stylists to the stars who keep us turning our heads with their on-point taste. Mimi Cuttrell Mimi Cuttrell is the stylist to Ariana Grande, Gigi Hadid, Priyanka Chopra, and more. Cuttrell got her start assisting celebrity stylists in L.A. before branching out on her own after four years of experience and networking. Drawing on her own personal style, Cuttrell is known for turning out classic, tailored looks often adorned with standout accessories. Big on up-and-coming designers and brands, Cuttrell is a visionary who finds inspiration everywhere. “I’m a very visual person. I’m always looking at architecture and different color combinations in interiors and in nature.” (via Vogue France)Law Roach Law Roach is most famously known for his work as Zendaya’s stylist and the co-creator of the star’s clothing and shoe line, Daya. Roach has also worked with celebs like Naomi Osaka, Kerry Washington, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others. Roach’s career as an “image architect” started at his Deliciously Vintage boutique when Kanye West browsed the shop in 2009, drawing the attention of press and paparazzi. Since then, Roach has been a fixture in fashion, styling scores of celebrities and in 2017 became the first Black stylist to grace the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s annual “Stylists and Stars” issue. Jahleel Weaver Starting out as an assistant to Mel Ottenberg, Jahleel Weaver is Rihanna’s full-time personal stylist and the official creative director for Fenty. “The most valuable thing Jahleel brings to the process is his complete understanding of my vision,” the Grammy Award-winner says of Weaver. (via The New York Times)With a fresh focus that sets him apart from the pack, Weaver consistently comes up with new ideas that keep fashion fans compelled, like Fenty’s strategy of releasing collections in the same style of album drops. Zerina Akers Best known as Beyonce’s personal stylist and wardrobe curator, New York-based Zerina Akers’ mission as a stylist is to inspire her clients to express their authentic selves. From her humble start as a fashion closet intern for W Magazine to her current status as stylist to some of the biggest names around, Akers is all about style that breaks the mold. “Fluid and experimental,” the Emmy award-winning costume designer is currently working on expanding her shopping platform, Black Owned Everything, with plans of possibly developing products of her own. Samantha Burkhart L.A.-based Samantha Burkhart is the stylist behind edgy fashionistas like Billie Eilish, Poppy, Grimes, and more. Despite the influence of her fashion-forward mother and grandmother, and her interest in crafting her own personal style at 11, Burkhart didn’t originally intend to become a stylist. "I accidentally fell into styling, which is funny to me. It wasn't something I ever set out to do." Black Hair Across The Decades

Through the years, Black women have made beauty history with awe-inspiring hairstyles that are unrivaled in their creativity and technique. From fly flappers to boho beauties, when it comes to hair history, the looks just kept on giving. This week, we’re paying homage to a few of our favorite hairstyles that look fabulous while standing the test of time. Making wavesMade popular by icons like silver screen star Josephine Baker, finger waves are one of the looks most associated with the Roaring ‘20s and flapper culture. With a changing political climate and women as a whole wanting to see their place in society evolve, fashion began to favor styles that were outside of the norm. This included shorter hairstyles that “delighted the fashionable but frightened the more conservative,” according to Pamela Church Gibson, author, and fashion historian. (via Fashion Magazine)Finger waves made a big comeback in the ‘90s with stars like Missy Elliot, Foxy Brown, and TLC emulating the style and making it their own. Knotty and niceBantu knots (also known as Chiny bumps or Zulu bumps in some parts of the world) started out as a protective style, created by the Bantu people, whose roots are spread out across Africa these days. These gorgeous twists can be done on all types of hair from natural to relaxed, braided to loc-ed, or even on wet hair in what is known as a “knot-out” to create sleek and defined curls. Plait-inum styleOriginating in Africa, box braids can be traced back to ancient times — 3500 B.C. to be exact. Traditionally, these braids were worn to represent status, power, to differentiate between tribes and even to communicate messages. Braiding wasn’t only done for style, it was done for the culture. “Braiding was and is a social art. Because of the amount of time it can take, people often would take the time to socialize. It began with the elders braiding their children, then the children would watch and learn from them…This tradition of bonding was carried on for generations and quickly made its way across the world,” says Alysa Pace of Bomane Salon. Gaining major popularity in the 1960s and 70s with the Black is Beautiful movement, afros became a way to express individuality and pride in race and culture. Today, following the same mindset, afros are a big part of the natural hair movement and a symbol of Black beauty and uniqueness. From the high puff pony to afro puffs and everything in between, this style will always be synonymous with self-love and Black joy.We love these legendary hair looks from throughout history. 5 Black Creatives Leading The Culture...

Representation is important, and that’s no different when it comes to television. As we sit down to enjoy our favorite shows, it’s pivotal to pay tribute to the people behind the scenes that set the stage for our entertainment. Here are five prolific Black creatives who represent the culture while making their mark on television. Shiona Turini Consultant, stylist, and costume designer Shiona Turini has worked her visual magic everywhere from fashion to entertainment. As a costume designer for “Insecure”, Turini has constantly turned out looks that boast style and ingenuity. While “Insecure” is known for highlighting all forms of Black talent, Turini’s vision set a new record with episode 7 of season 5 in which all costumes were created by Black female designers.Kim Kimble Kim Kimble is known for her work as a celebrity hairstylist with clients including Beyonce, Brandy Norwood, Mary J. Blige, Halle Berry, and more. Kimble’s passion for hair has been lifelong. As a teenager, Kim worked in her mother’s salon, before opening her own salon in 1995. While you may remember her from her starring role on the reality television show “L.A. Hair”, she currently leads the hair department responsible for the head-turning looks on HBO’s knockout hit “Euphoria”. Shonda Rhimes Gaining notoriety as the showrunner for “Grey’s Anatomy”, Shonda Rhimes is one of the most prominent creatives in the industry to date. Named as one of Time Magazine’s Time 100 in their list of 100 most influential people in the world in 2007 and 2021, Rhimes currently has a multi-year, multi-million dollar deal with Netflix. Rhimes’ most recent releases on Netflix include quasi-historical romance “Bridgerton”, and the binge-worthy “Inventing Anna” based on the Anna Delvey story. Michelle R. Cole As the costume designer for three Kenya Barris shows (“Black-ish”, “Grown-ish” and “#BlackAF”), Michelle R. Cole is fueled by her father’s advice for her as she went to work in the entertainment industry: "He would say, 'You're Black, don't forget that. But you can do it and there are going to be forces that are going to try and stop you. But don't let them stop you.” (via Fashionista.com) That strength in spirit shines through in the colorful, often Afrocentric costumes Cole has put together in her three-decade-long career and is no doubt the energy that got her six Emmy nominations and the L.A. Confidential Impact Award. Ayanna J. Kimani Hailing from Jamaica, Ayanna J. Kimani is a distinctive designer who creates memorable looks for film, television and the red carpet. After university, Kimani moved to California where she got her first taste of the worlds of costume and wardrobe assisting celebrity stylists. Drawing on her own unique personal style full of ethnic prints and classic cuts, Kimani’s work can be seen on “Insecure”, OWN’s “Queen Sugar”, and most recently “All American: Homecoming” on The CW.These examples of Black excellence continue to motivate us even when the screen is off.
