You are beautiful. I love your personality! And your hair….I absolutely love your hair. Yes, Rosettes, we’re talking to you! This month we’re highlighting a very special day that often gets little recognition…National Compliment Day! Held annually on January 24th, National Compliment Day offers every person an opportunity to make their neighbor simply feel good. We love this day because it’s a moment to look at the “glass half-full,” and share some love with those around us. The power of a compliment is remarkable. A recent Forbes article referenced a study that showed "to the brain, receiving a compliment is as much of a social reward as being rewarded with money.” Talk about valuable!
National Compliment Day is said to have started in 1998 by two women from New Hampshire that understood the importance of verbal gifts. Even today, compliments are vital to today’s society, especially in a world where human interaction is becoming less physical and more virtual – leaving room for error in communication. Internetmatters.org shared that“the heavy use of social media is associated with poorer mental health.” This speaks volumes to what a lot of people may be going through – and even has in common. So how can this day help combat this statistic? By simply being polite and saying something nice.
In addition to making those around you feel good about themselves, compliments serve other purposes too. Compliments can encourage a happier and more harmonious environment. They show respect, admiration, approval, gratitude, trust, appreciation, and hope. They make individuals feel good, which affects the larger community with happier attitudes. Compliments also make people more productive. When compliments are skills-based, they can make the receiver feel good about their capabilities, and in turn, encourage them to work harder at the task or skill they were complimented for.
How can you get creative with handing out compliments on National Compliment Day? Here are five easy-to-implement tips to get creative with your kind words:
Write someone a hand-written letter
This is a great idea because cards lend a unique touch to the compliment. It can be as simple as three sentences or as long as three paragraphs. Papyrus Cards are some of the most beautifully crafted cards to give as a token of appreciation, and offer enough space to write a nice, heartwarming letter.
